Tales from the Northern Territory: Tondy Mwaita

There are many exceptional employees that join GB without claims experience and with determination, combined with a targeted in-house training program, rise up through our ranks.

Tondy Mwaita is one such employee; he joined GB as part of our NT start up last year and is now celebrating his promotion to a Return to Independance Specialist.

For someone who has been part of the GB family for a short time, it was remarkably quick and easy to get glowing feedback about Tondy from his colleagues. His reputation as a warm and kind hearted individual, sits alongside his love for grill’d burgers.

It’s been over six months since GB went live in the Northern Territory, with an extraordinarily experienced crew handling self insurance claims management services to all Territory government staff.

Tondy, however, was new to the world of claims, having just arrived in Darwin from Zimbabwe. He instantly impressed GB with his personality and potential; having had many years of experience in financial services, with MBA and BBA qualifications, and was hired as a Claims Officer.

Tondy recalls those early days of start up fondly; ‘I’ll always remember the camaraderie during the training sessions and the first few months of going live, despite the team only having known each other a short time. Day one left a lasting imprint on me, all the guidance, support and encouragement from everyone just before taking my first call – they were rooting for me and willing me to succeed. I couldn’t have done it without all of that amazing assistance and solidarity.’

Ben Sheat, General Manager Self Insurance also remembers the first day well; ‘I had the pleasure of sitting with Tondy on day one of NT going live. We were discussing the hypotheticals of talking to injured workers through the morning, as he was a little bit nervous to take his first ever call. When he took his first call, he handled it with maturity, empathy and a great level of customer service. I was blown away that this was a person who had never managed claims before and knew we had someone who was going places.’

Going places was correct, since then Tondy has thrown himself into life at GB, becoming an active member of the Culture Champion group and working hard to build his claims knowledge and experience.

John Deane, Operations Manager NT, praised how hard Tondy worked for this promotion, ‘He has taken the initiative in developing his claims and injury management skills over the last six months. Tondy can regularly be seen independently researching, as well collaborating with his colleagues, to draw on their experience when developing and executing plans. Tondy also consistently demonstrates a high level of customer service in all his interactions, and as has been a seamless addition to the GB family.

Tondy feels that the culture of GB has had the biggest impact on his success so far, ‘Until I came to GB, I probably would have told you that culture was just one among several important elements in any organization's makeup and success. That’s because I’d never seen such a supportive culture in any workplace. I have now come to see, in my time thus far at GB, that culture isn't just one aspect of the game, it is the game. An organization is nothing more than the collective capacity of its people to create value. I’m truly humbled and absolutely proud to be associated with everything GB!’
