Time to Travel: How to Prepare for Travel During the Coronavirus

The COVID-19 outbreak has already shut down universities, workplaces, sporting events. But for some of us, travel plans must march on. Whether you have a non-refundable vacation planned or have to present at a conference for work, there are sometimes you can’t avoid travel.

But this is a dangerous time to travel, and it’s important to take proper safety precautions. Read on to learn how to keep yourself safe and healthy during the coronavirus outbreak.

Should You Wear a Mask?

Wearing a mask while you travel can be somewhat helpful in preventing spread of coronavirus. It is important to make sure that you're using a mask designed for healthcare workers. Respirator masks used for shop or epoxy work will not protect you.

But more important than wearing a mask is making sure you practice proper hygiene while you travel. Wash your hands often, avoid touching people, and do not touch your face. Make sure you always cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue or your elbow, and wash your hands immediately afterward.

Where and How to Travel

In general right now, flying anywhere is a bad idea. Being trapped in a plane with potentially infected or immunocompromised people for a long period of time increases your risk of both passing and contracting the virus. If you have a trip you must take, drive if at all possible.

It's also a good idea to avoid crowded areas, try to reschedule work conferences and use audio and video-conferencing instead of face to face meetings.

Stock Up on Supplies

While you’re at home, it can be easy enough to get access to hand sanitizer, sanitary wipes, and soap. But when you’re traveling abroad, you may have a more difficult time getting hold of those supplies. This is especially true during a time of pandemic and fear.

Bring plenty of sanitary tools with you on your trip. Pack several packs of alcohol-based wipes and hand sanitizers, including some in your travel on and day bag. Also bring some latex or nitrile gloves and refills on all your prescriptions.

Plan Your Time to Travel

This is a dangerous time to travel, but sometimes travel plans are unavoidable. Taking the proper precautions can help you stay safe and healthy during the coronavirus outbreak. Be sure to wash and sanitize your hands frequently, and take out a travel health insurance policy that will cover you if you do get sick abroad.
