Meet Marina Thomas: Positive, Inspiring Business Account Manager
Every International Women’s Day, GB recognises and celebrates the accomplishments of the inspiring women we work with. This year, we asked our people to nominate an inspiring female leader that they work with, and we were overwhelmed with dozens of very worthy nominations. After a tough process, nine women were selected to be profiled for 2020, based on their amazing accomplishments over the past 12 months.
All of the women featured in these interviews will represent GB at the Women in Insurance Leadership Summit in August.
Meet Marina Thomas, an inspiring, supportive member of the Gallagher Bassett family.
Marina joined GB in 2007 and has worked her way up to the role of Business Account Manager. Marina works with her clients to educate and support them on all workers’ compensation matters; she assists with prevention strategies and builds meaningful, long term relationships with them – some of which span 10 plus years!
Marina was nominated by a colleague, who is inspired by the way she always approaches all aspects of her life in a positive manner, regardless of any challenges she may be experiencing. Marina leads by example and exhibits integrity, humility and a clear focus in everything she does.
Marina has been an active driving force behind GB's culture; constantly looking at ways to engage and improve the culture of the broader business, connect teams, business units, and support each other along the way. Marina has had a positive cultural impact not only on the team she works in, but on the broader operation. Nothing is ever an issue for her, she always puts her hand up for additional duties and is a role model for all staff. Through times of change Marina has remained a positive influence on everyone around her. Marina lives The Gallagher Way.
We recently sat down with Marina to find out more about her:
What has been your journey to get to your current position?
I started in the industry back in 2002 as a Case Manager. Over the past 18 years I have worked in a number of different roles, including customer service and learning and development. My goal was always to become a Business Account Manager – and I achieved this 9 years ago.
Do you have a standout career highlight?
I have many highlights of my career, but one that really stands out was being nominated for Business Account Manager of the year 2018 by one of my clients - 7-Eleven. I became one of 18 finalists, and was incredibly proud to be named as the winner.
What motivates or drives your passion for the insurance/risk management industry? Why do you recommend our industry for the next generation of women entering the workforce?
I love helping people and that’s what this industry is all about. As a woman in the insurance/risk industry I’m encouraged and cheered on to be the best person I can be, in the business and outside of work. I have passion for making a difference. I would encourage women to work in insurance, where you will be supported and encouraged to be you!
What do you like most about Gallagher Bassett in five words or less?
Encouraging, supportive, leaders, energetic and trustworthy
How is Gallagher Bassett is helping you face your future with confidence?
GB has never discouraged me and always supported me. Some examples of this include flexible working arrangements, encouraging me to become culture champion, and looking at ways to help me improve and achieve my goals.
Who is your inspiration or role model?
My mum. She has taught me a lot and encouraged me in so many ways. She is a tough lady and always told me to hold my head up, be strong and courageous.
What does equality mean to you?
Equality means that all people are equal, we are all here to do same thing. I am very supportive of women in leadership and I’m encouraged to see more women guiding and leading companies to success and beyond.
Marina is also a gold medal winner, taking out the top spot in the tennis during the Australian Transplant Games in 2018. She will be participating at the Games again in September, in Tasmania. Good luck Marina, we hope you can bring home the gold again!
