GB's 2022 Internship Program

Kelly Bassett from our Talent Development Team sat down with Tia Stagakis to discuss her experience as an intern at GB and securing a role as a DRO.

Congratulations on completing your internship with GB and also on securing a role as a DRO. You are studying a double degree in Law/Commerce, what attracted you to apply for the Workers Compensation intern role at GB?

I saw the role advertised online for an internship here at GB and I thought it would be a great opportunity to gain some practical experience in an area that I wasn’t familiar with.  I also thought the internship would be a great way increase my skill set and further develop my knowledge whilst still studying and also enable me to gain experience working in a corporate environment within a large company.

You obviously enjoyed your time at GB as an intern as you applied and secured a role at GB. Tell me about the process.

During my internship I really enjoyed my experience with GB and was saddened when it was coming to an end.  Then when I saw an advertisement for a DRO role I thought this would be such an excellent opportunity for me as a dispute role fits in with my studies well.

What surprised you most about GB?

What surprised me most about GB was the people and the world of support that was available to me throughout my internship.   Everyone here has been so approachable and helpful, and the team I was affiliated with as apart of my internship were so engaging, which also further sparked my interest in this industry.

You have a few years left before you finish your degree.  How have GB been flexible to allow you to work and continue to complete your studies?

GB has been amazing with being flexible and accommodating my new role to allow me to finish my studies concurrently.  My team manager was extremely supportive with letting me choose work days that didn’t conflict with my studies and being flexible with my hours.

How has this experience helped you to utilise your formal education in a workplace?

The internship helped me utilise my formal education practically as I was required to read through legislation and documents from external legal providers, which is a skill that I developed through my law degree.  This was beneficial to me as it helped me understand the legislative side of return to work, and also helped me collect and understand information that helped me with my intern project.  The commerce side also helped me with my project when I had to analyse financial data in order to identify patterns and opportunities for improvement.
