South Australian GB’ers sleep out for homelessness

On the 14th of July, while we were all tucked up in bed, a team of 19 South Australian GB’ers (including SA General Manager, Shaun Meehan!) gathered to spend the night in the St Francis Xavier Cathedral Hall, on Wakefield Street in Adelaide for the 2017 Vinnies Corporate sleep out.

The event was held to raise money and promote awareness of homelessness in Australia. The participants extended their voices, networks and resources to help advocate and raise vital funds for Vinnies Homeless Services across the country.

The Vinnies Corporate Sleep out is about building stronger, more compassionate communities.

Ruthie Chileshe, the President of the Adelaide Vinnies Group was the guest speaker for the evening. Ruthie is directly involved with our community and the work Vinnies do. She talked through her experiences in helping those in need giving the group a feel for what it is truly like on the streets of Adelaide.

Shaun Meehan spoke of his support of the Vinnies initiative.

“At GB, we take pride in actively giving back to the community. I am really proud of the team that gathered on Friday in support of such a serious issue. More than 2.5 million Australians are living below the poverty line and more than 105,000 Australians are experiencing homelessness”

The GB team raised a whopping $7,903.22 for the event! All proceeds are donated to Vinnies.

The Vinnies CEO Sleep out began as a local community venture in Sydney’s Parramatta in 2006, the brainchild of a local business leader, Bernard Fehon, Managing Director of Tactical Solutions.

Over ten years later the Vinnies CEO sleep out is now an inaugural annual event that has grown in participation and following.

Every dollar the Vinnies CEO Sleep out raises continues to help provide crucial assistance to people experiencing homelessness, with the aim of breaking the cycle of homelessness.

Of the more than 105,000 Australians who are currently homeless, just under half of these are women, a quarter of whom are under the age of 18.
