GB New Zealand’s Marine Loss division completes aerial salvage

Following the acquisition of Auckland-headquartered Symetri Ltd, Gallagher Bassett now offers Loss Adjusting of the Marine Industry throughout New Zealand.

This entails the assessment of anything from fishing boats, speed boats, cruisers and jet-skis, to large luxury launches and sometimes cargo ships.

Martin Croucher, Gallagher Bassett’s (formerly Symetri) Marine Loss Adjustor for New Zealand is an experienced Marine Assessor who recently managed an aerial salvage and recovery of a boat that had been grounded on rocks under a cliff-face on the Coromandel peninsula

The boat had been stranded for three days and any sea-born salvage was going to be difficult as the vessel was well above the high tide mark and on a very exposed coastline.

As a result, it required a helicopter to lower two men on to the rocks where they secured the boat, flew it out and landed it on a waiting boat trailer.

As a boat builder by trade, electrical engineer by profession Martin has a wealth of experience and is set in good stead to be working on high risk and unique salvages. Responsible for determining logistics such as whether helicopters, cranes, tug boats, divers and/or barges are required in the salvage or recovery of a vessel.

GB’s Marine Loss division engages in making the arrangements of any sea-born or aerial salvage, detailing the cause and the event that lead to the damage, determining any scope for repair, documenting their assessment of damage, determination over cause and liability and reporting this information to the relevant insurance company.

GB New Zealand’s Managing Director, Craig Furness speaks highly of the division and the opportunity for growth in this market,

“We have a team of dedicated professionals, who work collaboratively with key stakeholders to deliver world-class loss adjusting and surveying services to the marine industry across the country.

As a specialist division that we are keen to grow as a response to market needs.”

The acquisition of Symetri has strengthened GB’s offer to the New Zealand general insurance market by combining with their systems and capability.
